Identity and culture for the third time

On the 17th of November 2015 the third edition of the Students’ Scientific Association Conference has been organized in the topic ”Identity and Culture“ at the Faculty of Architecture from the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. The topic focuses on the cultural, scientific and turistical valorification of the Roman limes sector from Mureș County, Romania, especially on the heritage potentials of Călugăreni, for three years by far. The large interest in this topic, among the three-year old tradition, is also shown by the six “contestants”, each of them presenting projects related either to creating a multidisciplinary scientific base in Călugăreni, or to the valorification of the unique blend of Roman heritage and WW I shooting ditches in the same area. One of our team member took part in the jury composed of architect and archaeologist specialists, and had a very hard job to evaluate the interesting and thought-provoking projects.

Warriors, boots and a yurt

The exhibition ‘Avar warriors in Transylvania‘ organized by the Roman Limes Research Centre and the Gurghiu Department of Mureș County Museum opened the series of the colourful activities in the Castle as part of the national event ‘Night of the Museum’ on the 16th of May 2015. The exhibition was completed by the activities of various workshops focusing mainly on the everyday life of the communities from the Avar-period. In this sense a yurt was erected, a typical structure of eastern nomad populations and the main venue for most of their everyday activities where visitors could dress up in Avar costumes and make photos with themselves. Beside the reconstructions featured in the exhibition, the organisers of the workshops wore typical Avar-period costumes, thus contributing to the authentic historical atmosphere. The visitors had the opportunity to try out various craftsmen activities. They could make different accessories from felt and they could also try to make their typical Avar strap end applique used as necklace ornament. The children were engaged in special activities dedicated exclusively for them. They could design and make the costume of an Avar warrior or an Avar lady, and they could sew their own boots from textile.

The various activities and workshops so as the exhibition itself benefited from a great popularity, they attracted many visitors. Both children and adults spent a very fruitful and intersting day in the museum, experiencing in the same time the typical Avar lifestyle and crafts.

‘Avar warriors in Transylvania’ – exhibition opening and workshops

The opening of the exhibition entitled ‘Avar warriors in Transylvania (Războinici avari în Transilvania)’ will be organised as part of the cultural event known as ‘Night of the Museum’ on the 16th of May 2015, at 10 o’clock AM. The exhibition focuses on different aspects of Avar-period material culture, including weapons and fighting equipment, lifestyle, male and female clothing, funerary ritual, everyday life, as well as the relations between Avars and other ethnic groups of the Carpathian Basin. The exhibition will showcase a rich array of artefacts selected and borrowed from various museums of the country, as well as an abundant explanatory material and various reconstructions of the costume, weapons and harness of the period.

The exhibition can be visited between the 16th of May and 30th of September 2015 in the exhibition hall of tMureș County Museum from the Castle, Târgu Mureș.

Exhibition about identity and culture

On the 21^st of April 2015 (Tuesday), at 17 o`clock, in the exhibition hall of the Mureș County Museum from the Castle there will be the opening of the exhibition entitled Identity and culture 2. Three topics, fifteen projects. The Roman limes as cultural landscape – where next?

The exhibition will be opened by Zoltán Soós, director of Mureș County Museum, being followed by the speeches of the exhibition’s curator, architect Cicelle Gaull as well as of the archaeologist Szilamér Pánczél.

The exposed material is based on the results obtained in the frame of the cooperation between the students and professors of the Department of Industrial and Agricultural Building Design of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, a collaboration which took place during a four weeks long summer school organized in Mureș County. This cooperation was established in the frame of a multiannual international project (Limes as Cultural Landscape – Erasmus IP) in the summer of 2014.

The students had the chance to present the results of their researches made in Transylvania at the Students’ Scientific Association Conference organized last year. They analyzed the possibilities of promoting the Roman sites as touristic attractions as well as the challenges regarding the preservation of this highly precious heritage. In the three proposed topic there have been submitted fifteen architectural projects, all of them being presented for the first time in Târgu Mureș. The projects were evaluated by a jury consisted of architects and archaeologists.

The exhibition can be visited from 21^st of April until 10^th of May 2015.

2R Festival

The Mureș County Museum in collaboration with the Barn Theatre Association will organize the 2R FESTIVAL in the village of Călugăreni, parish of Eremitu, Mureș County on the 23rd of August 2014.

The cultural event offers an invitation for a time travel, in the Roman and Renaissance age, marked in the local landscape by important regional and national heritage values. The Roman defensive system as well as the auxiliary fort and settlement from Călugăreni have the potential to be nominated in the UNESCO World Heritage list, and also in the international site of the „The Frontiers of the Roman Empire”. The Franciscan monastery is one of the most important monuments of the late Renaissance period of Transylvania, a prestigious spiritual centre of the region until the 20th century.
The 2R FESTIVAL – ROMAN AND RENAISSANCE – FROM CĂLUGĂRENI will present and promote during the whole day the components of the provincial Roman culture and civilization, specific to the Roman Dacia, as well as the particular features of the Transylvanian Renaissance, through a series of events and activities with cultural-educational character with considerable impact on a large audience.
In the court of the Barn Theatre from Călugăreni military demonstrations and gladiator fights will be organized with the participation of associations specialized in historical re-enactments, and workshops inspired from the Roman everyday life will be also functioning. The spirit of the Renaissance and the monastic life will be evoked in the court of the Franciscan church.

The archaeologists from the Mureș County Museum together with partners from Germany, Hungary and Romania, which are carrying out archaeological investigations in the military fort and settlement from Călugăreni this time, will provide guided tours to the archaeological excavations and will show the visitors the recently found and restored archaeological artefacts. An exhibition, entitled „Romans in Călugăreni” will also be opened. This presents the discoveries from the Roman fort and settlement situated in the territory of the village, recovered during archaeological researches from 2004, and 2011-2013. The exhibition entitled „Identity and Culture. Three Topics, Eleven Projects” present the work of the students from the Department of Industrial and Agricultural Building Design of the University of Technology and Economics from Budapest about the possibilities of promoting the Roman limes. The Roman military life will be shown through the displayed mock-ups of the exhibition entitled „The Romans through Gulliver’s Eye”. There will be held presentations focusing on the Roman culture and civilization in general, and especially on the impact of the Roman culture and civilization on Roman Dacia. In the Franciscan church and monastery will also take place thematic guided tours. An exhibition („The book collection of the Franciscan from Călugăreni”) presenting the history of the monastery’s library will be opened. The activities will be ended by a torched parade to the Roman site with the participation of all visitors. During the whole day there will be organized workshops and activities illustrating the life and occupations of the Romans from the Empire’s provinces: making mosaics, pottery, stone-working, Latin writing, theatre, hairdressing, tailoring, social games, Roman cuisine, wine tasting, slave market, sweet-shop etc. The activities and workshops related to the Renaissance monastic milieu will be the followings: the art of writing, paper manufacture, rosary making, blacksmithing etc.
In order to ensure the successful course of this project, the organizers collaborate with the Mayor’s Office of Eremitu, Teleki Library, Roman Limes Research Centre, Artecotur Association, Unitarcoop, Pokoly Association and the project „Roman Limes as European Cultural Landscape”. The main financial support is provided by the Mureș County Council.

The event’s main purpose is to promote the archaeological and historical investigations and to offer the chance for the visitors to re-live the past for a day.

Public transportation with minibuses on the following route: Târgu Mureş (Voiajor bus station) – Călugăreni – Câmpu Cetăţii/Sovata and Sovata/Câmpu Cetăţii – Călugăreni – Târgu Mureş.
By car on the following route: Târgu Mureș –Ernei –Călugăreni.
By bicycles on the following routs: Târgu Mureș – Livezeni – Miercurea Nirajului – Vărgata – Călugăreni, or Târgu Mureș – Sângeorgiu de Mureș – Ernei – Căluşeri – Isla – Călugăreni.

Open Day at the Gurghiu Castle (Mureș County)

The Gurghiu Department in collaboration with the Roman Limes Research Centre organised the Open Day event which took place in the Rákóczi–Bornemisza castle from Gurghiu on the 3^rd of May 2014. During this event the rehabilitation project of the Rákóczi–Bornemisza castle has been presented and an exhibition, Identity and culture. Three topics, eleven projects. Thoughts on the heritage of the Roman limes, was accessible for the public. On this occasion special guided tours in the castle and interesting interactive activities for the children were organized as well.

School in a different way

Promoting the heritage of the Roman culture, as well as its achievement in the territory of nowadays Romania represents a priority for the education of the future generation. Therefore, the Roman Limes Research Centre organized an educational workshop for pupils from the Bethlen Gábor School from Odorheiu Secuiesc on the occasion of the event Școala altfel / Iskola másként (School in a different way), organized nationwide between the 7^th and the 11^th of April 2014. The educational event in the form of an open day, offers an alternative teaching and learning approach. Our workshop entitled Ancient Rome, offered a very interactive insight into the Roman culture and the everyday life of the soldiers. A short general presentation, about the Roman culture, the army and its impact on our daily life and culture, was held for the pupils. For their own delight, children could dress both like a Roman civilian and soldier, they could play puzzle (made from photos of the Roman forts from Mureș County) and Roman board games, paint colouring pages.
